Winter-Proofing Your Outdoor Spaces: Protecting Plants, Patios, and Pathways

Learn how to shield your plants and hardscapes from winter damage with smart strategies for freezing temperatures and snow.

Plants are especially vulnerable to frost and freezing temperatures, so proper care is essential during winter. For delicate plants, consider using frost covers or fabric wraps to keep them warm. Grouping container plants together or moving them indoors can also help reduce exposure to extreme cold. Winterizing your garden beds by adding a layer of compost or mulch insulates the roots, giving them extra protection from freezing temperatures.

Hardscapes such as patios, pathways, and retaining walls require winter maintenance to avoid cracking or damage from frost heave. Power wash surfaces in the fall to remove dirt and debris that can trap moisture and cause staining. Applying a sealant to pavers, concrete, or natural stone can further prevent water absorption, which expands and cracks during freezing weather. Additionally, installing drainage solutions ensures that water runoff doesn’t pool on hard surfaces, reducing the risk of damage.

Winter weather can also take a toll on pathways and driveways. Snow and ice accumulation can make surfaces slippery, so it’s important to have de-icing materials ready. Avoid salt-based de-icers, which can corrode concrete and damage nearby plants. Instead, use pet- and plant-safe alternatives like calcium magnesium acetate. Regular maintenance and proactive care will help your hardscapes withstand the harsh winter months and look great when spring arrives.
